In poker, players can think on a few different levels. Generally, the more advanced a player is the higher a level he is thinking on. You should be thinking on at least three levels whenever you play poker. The levels are:

1. What do you have? This is the simplest level; you merely look at your hand and the board and figure out how strong your hand is.

2. What does your opponent have? This is a bit more complicated as you have to try to pin them down to as narrow a range of holdings as you can.

3. What does your opponent think that you think that he has? Here you are trying to figure out his level 3 thought process.

Level #4. Laying Down Your Hand – Try to Figure Out Where You Are In The Hand.

When you are playing poker, you will sometimes be forced to lay down your hand. It would be best if you were thinking about the following:

1. If your opponent re-raises and you don’t have the cards to stop him, you should fold. If you think you have the best hand, don’t raise him any more than 3 times. Let him make a mistake first.

2. If you think you have the best hand and your opponent bets small, then you should call him down. You want your opponent to believe that you are weak before you call him down.

3. Even when you think you have the best hand, you should call your opponent down if he is betting aggressively. You may want to do this even when you think you have the best hand pre-flop unless, of course, you want to get further in hand.

Level #3. Spy Upon Your opponent – Checking the Flop.

When you “spy” upon your opponent, you are making strongly plays on your hand. I like to watch people and try to pick up on their gestures: their pose, their facial expressions, their hand movements, everything. If your opponent raises and you don’t have the cards you want, don’t give up, keep a check and be selective. Pick your opponents and get them.

The only decisions that matter is what level the player are playing at. When a player is trying to get mentally ready for a tournament (or a session of online poker), they should be playing with a focusing mind, and the player will make fewer mistakes and win more at the table.

But there is still a certain level that the player can’t fix. In advanced poker games, you will find that some players are tough to read.
