Slow play will allow you to see more cards, but you are missing opportunities to win the pot in the process.

When you consider that you’ve missed two blinds, it’s easy to remember all the times you led out with a big raise and missed, especially if that missed lead was to get into the pot.

The likelihood of your opponent drawing out on you increases dramatically in these situations. Though many players will draw out on you as well, you, the seasoned player, will know when it’s time to slow down.

So many times, I see players who slow down way too much in the early stages. Definitely not the smartest of decisions, and usually a recipe for disaster.

Everything really comes down to knowing the type of opponents at the table. Are you up against a tight passive player? Or are you up against a bluffing donkey? It’s important to know which type you are playing to make that decision easier.

The other thing about knowing what type of player you are playing against is knowing how to play your hand after they raise. This is often where the plays come into place, so it’s crucial to know how to play after a raise.

For example, against a tight passive player, you can probably get away with a half-pot bet. Against a madman, you probably don’t want to.

So, yes, you can play aggressively. However, when you do, you want to be very selective and see a flop as cheap as possible. Stop chasing draws and instead win pots from holding the best hand pre-flop or being the only one with a real hand post-flop.

But, you have to, at some point, leave the game completely. That’s a hard lesson to learn but a necessary one. If you think you’re better than them or think you’re stronger, you’ll get beat down. Keep in mind that you’ll get terrific at this and be able to dominate people who play a very tight-aggressive style, and that’s the thing that I believe grinds out a huge profit.

Don’t be put off by bad beats; they are inevitable, especially online. They’re part of the game; expect them. If you’re having a bad day, take a break and remember that you’ll beat them next time.

You’ll make mistakes along the way but learn from them. And remember, there’s no reason to slow down. Just win the hand and move on to the next one.
