Gary Carson’s last book, a book he wrote in his honour, amazed me. It is a pleasure to read because the content is brilliant and, I believe, good. This book focuses on beginners, and there are some good techniques. I often believe beginners do not know that they need to be cautious before throwing money at high stakes. I think this book will be of much help to the beginner.

In the After 50 Years book, Carson gives us many memorable anecdotes about poker players of many generations, from old to young, and almost all over the world. You will read about poker events, some related to poker only and some having to do with many other things. This is the perfect book for beginners who want to read about poker history or feel that poker is not just a game of luck.

Some interesting poker sayings that inspire the book:

“You can’t learn the game unless you play it, although the best way to learn it is from your own experience.”

“The game is not worth throwing.”

“I hate to see a beautiful hand, but if the dealer has a 2, I might let it fall.”

“When you maglaro ng poker, your money, unconsciously, hates you.”

All these quotes were Sendhdeep Singh’s, and they inspired me a lot. Later, when I started to play poker, these sayings would inspire me also. Very often, when I began to calculate the odds, I would get confused, and my game would suffer. Now I know that I need to concentrate on the odds, not on the cards, to make a good game.

In After 50 Years book, Carson focuses on No-Limit Hold’em, a popular poker variant today. In After 50 Years book, Carson gives many diverse and strong advice on playing this game. Some of the advice that I found very useful when playing was:

1. You need to understand the importance of player anonymity. You cannot be sure that the person you are playing against is trustworthy. Therefore, you need to check out the other players. If you can, play against the huge stack. Then, you can bet that the person will not be able to concentrate in the game.

2. You need to play against a wider range of players.

Advanced players are involved in far more hands than the players in beginner. If you cannot calculate whether you are beating advanced players, you are not at your best.

3. Fold more than once. It is essential to fold once in a while to keep your strategy. Online, there are chances that you will be forced to play more than one table. In the same way, in live poker, you need to fold if you have received a bad beat. You need to take a break after winning or to think about your mistakes.

4. Learn basic poker shuffling and variations. If you cannot shuffle cards, you cannot play the game. Learn basic things or pay for books about card shuffling.

5. Get a poker timer. It is advisable to use an automatic shuffler for your home games. At the casinos, use the ones that do not require batteries. You can also buy ready-made poker timers.

6. Watch how other players do. You can join a poker club or buy a poker book. Try to notice betting patterns and watch for your opportunities to play.

7. Learn the discipline of the game. Do not think that you are invincible. Poker is a game of people. Even if you have the best cards, you may lose.

8. Poker is a game of people that is full of deceit and luck. You may win; you may lose. Your chances of winning are less than those who know the game perfectly.
