The Importance of Position in Poker

The first and probably the most important concept in poker is position. Most often than not, it is hard for a player to make a decision when they are in a raise or folded position. In a nutshell, the position is where you are seated at the table in reference to the dealer. Remember, the dealer is the person that determines who the dealer button has. Because of this, you want to try establishing yourself in your own position. Depending on your position at the poker table, you might consider the following options:

1. If you are the first person to act and want to check, you could check or bet. If you are playing live, the dealer or the person sitting directly to the left of you acts as the dealer.

2. If you are playing online, you do not have the luxury of knowing who will act before you. However, you can watch what the person before you does. It is recommended that you wait until it is your turn to act to check, raise, or fold, but it all starts moving at once, so it is hard to “read” who will act behind you. I like to act as soon as it is my turn. If you wait until it is folded, you might not get many chances to act – or you might make a mistake, and someone may bet there instead.

3. You can check or bet if you think you will not be called. If you are not going to be called, you can bet or raise. If many people see the flop, they will not want to put in a big raise because it will be obvious they have a monster. If you check in this situation, some players will still call, others will fold, and you will probably get in cheap since no one really wants to call with hands like A-A, but you can definitely get in cheap.

These are the spots that you want to try your luck with. If you do not get anything good, you can always back out later and wait for the next opportunity.

Opponents Who Can Fancy Bluff

If you think your opponent(s) can fancy bluff, you can attempt to stretch the truth slightly. This strategy is a combination of deception and position. Players who are willing to chickadee or are timid to some degree about their cards are more likely to fold than others. You want to attempt to rival their courage.

Perhaps the exception to that rule is that they may have a queen or seven in their hand, but chances are they won’t make a play for all your chips.

Position Is key

As you data your opponents, you’ll see the stronger players tend to be in the lead. This doesn’t always mean they have the best cards, but in general, they tend to have the most confidence in their hands. While it is an obvious advantage, players find it harder to fold against aggressive players. Try to be in a late position, and you might get some action even though you have rubbish. Try to steal the blinds from the weak players.

One of the key pieces of information you need to know to maximize your chances is where you are seated in relation to the dealer position. An ace on the board means that one player has a hand that can beat all others, no matter what their cards are. Being the last player to act means that you can’t change your mind once someone else acts – which may mean folding if someone else has raised before it’s your turn again.

In conclusion, the position is an important concept in poker. Knowing when to check, raise or fold can put a whole lot of money in your pocket.
